Orchid Problems - Common Problems your Orchid Might Face

Orchid problems go hand in hand with growing orchids, sometimes they just can't be avoided. The good thing about orchids is that they aren't native to many of the environments that we place them in, and so are also not susceptible to many common problems that might occur with your run of the mill garden plants. Here a a few of the more common orchid problems:

Another positive thing about orchids is that they are usually grown indoors so aren't often bothered by the usual garden pests. Some of the more common pests for orchids include:

SlugsWeevels Mealybug Greenfly

The good news is that most of these pests can be removed with standard pesticides. However if you orchid has pest problems it is always a good idea to ask a professional if a pesticide with harm your plant. After all you wouldn't want to introduce more orchid problems by removing old ones.

Orchid Diseases

A far more common cause of orchid problems are diseases. This can be a whole topic in itself (and if you'd like more details just follow the link at the end of this article). Orchids can fall foul of leaf rot, mildew, botrytis and many other pathogens. The best way to combat these sorts of problem is to make sure there is sufficient air around the plants at night. Again, if you are unsure get to your local florist or expert as soon as possible and have it looked at.

Orchid Viruses

These are the nastiest of orchid problems. The good news is they are actually very rare. CymMV and ORSV are two of the most common viruses and manifest themselves in the leaves of your plant. Both these viruses which affect orchids are very stable and lose their infectivity very slowly, so sap from an infected plant that has dried onto tools, pots or benching provides an excellent source of infection. They can remain infectious for weeks or longer under the right conditions.

Orchid Treatment

It is possible to treat many of these orchid problems yourself but I advise asking a professional if you are really concerned.
